When Saddam came to power, the Gulf Cup was held in Iraq in that year also,
before this year i.e. 2023, Gulf Cup matches were played in Iraq in the year 1979 itself. This was the same year when Saddam Hussein got the power of Iraq. However, when Saddam invaded Kuwait in 1990, FIFA banned Iraq from hosting any international matches. Since then, after 23 years, such a match took place in Iraq.
